(The meaning of) the second Shahadah, which is (Ashhadu anna Muhammadar-Rasulullah) (is: “I know, I hold the conviction), i.e., I believe, and accept in my heart (and I declare) with my tongue (that Muhammad, the son of ^Abdullah, who is the son of ^Abdul-Muttalib, who is the son of Hashim, who is the son of ^Abdu-Manaf,) who is the son of Qusayy, who is the son of Kilab, who is the son of Murrah, who is the son of Ka^b, who is the son of Lu’ayy, who is the son of Ghalib, who is the son of Fihr, who is the son of Malik, who is the son of an-Nadr, who is the son of Kinanah, who is the son of Khuzaymah, who is the son of Mudrikah, who is the son of Ilyas, who is the son of Mudar, who is the son of Nizar, who is the son of Ma^add, who is the son of ^Adnan, (from the tribe of Quraysh,) which is the most noble Arabian tribe, (sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, is the slave of Allah and His Messenger to all the humans and jinn.)
(One must believe) i.e., believing in the message of our master Muhammad includes believing that (he was born in Makkah), that his mother was Aminah the daughter of Wahb from the clan of Zuhra from Quraysh, (and) that he was (sent as a Messenger therein); that is, he received the Revelation of Prophethood while he was an inhabitant of Makkah, and specifically while he was in the cave of Hira’. It also includes believing that (he immigrated), i.e., departed from Makkah (to) the Enlightened City of (al-Madinah) upon the order of Allah, and that he died (and was buried therein;) in the chamber of Lady ^A’ishah, may Allah raise her rank. (And this) also (includes believing) that (he was truthful in everything he told about and conveyed from Allah) and he did not err in that at all. He did not make any mistakes in what he conveyed from Allah—whether it was about the news of previous nations and the beginning of the creation, or about the permissible or prohibited actions, or about what will happen in the future. As for what he told of the worldly matters, which were without revelation, it was possible for him to make a mistake in that.
